Community Gardens Program
Cultivating food security one garden at a time
Community Gardens
Our first community garden was created in partnership with Franciscan Ministries in Cincinnati as a way to share the use of community garden plots with the Cincinnati area refugee population. The successful collaboration led to more community gardens scattered around Cincinnati. As of today, refugees and immigrants cultivate crops in Mt. Healthy, Hartwell, and Price Hill.
Food Security
Refugees and immigrants take fresh produce home from the community gardens. Gardens also provide produce for residents of their neighborhoods and area food pantries. Access to free fresh food enhances economic security, both for refugees and for other community members who have access to our produce.
Community Building
Gardening together facilitates integration of the refugee and immigrant population with the local community.
Mental & Physical Health
Working outside in the gardens minimizes feelings of isolation that come with arriving in an entirely new country. The act of gardening creates a positive impact on one’s mental health, in addition to fostering an active and healthy lifestyle.
Education
Our community garden partner Turner Farm teaches clients about sustainable growing practices and composting. This education enriches our community and alleviates harmful impacts on the environment.
